Thousands of Pounds Donated to Stars Appeal
A large sum of money was presented to the Stars Appeal from the Wilton Rotary Club at a special event which included attendance by the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Sarah Troughton.
THOUSANDS of pounds have been awarded to secure 35 acres of natural habitat by the Salisbury City Council.
The money will be spent on the purchase as a community asset, and is the natural habitat of water meadows surrounding the right-of-way footpath that links Churchfields and Lower Bemerton with Harnham.
SALISBURY Cathedral has more than 800 years of history in its current location but its origins were based at Old Sarum. Turn our attention back to 1218, and the Bishop of Salisbury chose to abandon the cathedral there and to move down the Avon to the location where the Cathedral is today.
According to the Head of Canine Behaviour at one dog welfare charity, ‘about six million dogs in the UK are negatively affected by fireworks.’
In the Dogs Trust’s National Dog Survey, more than 40% of owners stated their dogs were not always calm when fireworks were set off, so the Trust has issued advice to pet owners which includes staying at home with their pets to help keep dogs safe and relaxed. It can help to close the curtains, turn on the lights and have some background noise - music or the TV to help drown out the loud bangs.
We put Sven Hocking in the hot seat to find out what makes him tick.
Originally from Cornwall, Sven moved to Salisbury aged 14 and went to school at Bishops Wordsworth. Having been through grammar school, then comprehensive school, then grammar school again, Sven was a year behind everyone.
He said: “Back in the day, you were expected to know [to be at the same level], so that was a bit of a struggle. It was 1978, punk rock in its heyday and I was getting my rebellious streak.
“And that’s continued.”

Young Gallery launches new exhibition - Friday, October 25 - Saturday, January 4, 2025
The show is a collaboration with six artists, Henny Burnett, Susan Francis, Nick Grellier, Debbie Lee, Prudence Maltby and Corinna Spencer. Each artist has produced their own response to the theme of night, creating a varied show which features painting, drawing, videos and installations.
By exploring the artists’ personal stories relating to the dark hours, the exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on their own private experience of night.
The collaborating artists also selected works from the Young Gallery’s collection of over 4000 artworks and objects which they felt responded to the theme of the exhibition and their creative practice.
Dr Emily Dunbar, Curator and Gallery Manager said: “I’m so pleased the Young Gallery is able to host this exciting show. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with a talented group of artists and see their own creations alongside works from the Young Gallery’s diverse, permanent collection.”

Neal Riley and his wife Els lost their son Oscar at 31 weeks in January 2023. The couple’s ‘world fell apart again’ in November of that year when they lost their daughter Sophie at 35 weeks.
TWO grants are now available to support athletes with training or competition needs as part of Wiltshire Council’s Funding Future Olympians and Paralympians grants.
